Although he has always drawn, painted and photographed, Geert Slaats (1961) only became an artist at a later age. He works in fashion as a designer of sneakers and shoes. His artworks therefore revolve around the themes of fashion and street. He often starts from existing catwalk images or fashion ads. He edits them, makes them more abstract or adds new elements. Paradox: it is precisely what Slaats omits that shapes the image. He often works in mixed media and uses, among other things, residual materials from his shoe studio and sometimes even waste. His work thus connects in an original way with the comprehensive themes of recycling and circular art. Inner tubes become baseball caps, wood chips become couture dresses. The work is created intuitively through photography, drawing, painting and last but not least collage. Slaats' work is graphic and powerful and exudes balance and simplicity. It regularly refers to the spirit of the pop art movements in art.
Hoewel hij altijd al tekende, schilderde en fotografeerde, is Geert Slaats (1961) pas op latere leeftijd kunstenaar geworden. Hij werkt in de mode als ontwerper van sneakers en schoenen. Zijn kunstwerken bewegen zich dan ook rond de thema’s mode en street. Vaak gaat hij uit van bestaande catwalk-beelden of fashion-ads. Hij bewerkt ze,maakt ze abstracter of voegt er nieuwe elementen aan toe. Paradox: juist wat Slaats weglaat geeft het beeld vorm. Hij werkt vaak mixed media en gebruikt daarbij onder andere restmaterialen uit zijn schoenstudio en soms zelfs afval. Zijn werk sluit daarmee op een originele manier aan op de veelomvattende thema’s recycling en circular art. Binnenbanden worden baseball-cap, houtsnippers worden couture-jurkje. Het werk komt intuïtief tot stand door fotografie, tekenen, schilderen en last but not least collage. Het werk van Slaats is grafisch en powerful en straalt balans en eenvoud uit. Met regelmaat verwijst het naar de geest van de pop-art stromingen in de kunst.
